Hartmann promotes inclusion: insights from a ‘job swapping’ initiative in Germany

As part of a national push to foster inclusion in Germany, HARTMANN participated in the “Schichtwechsel” (literally “shift change”) initiative on 10 October 2024. The goal of the initiative is to break down barriers between people with and without disabilities and encourage dialogue.

Experience and respect

In cooperation with the NGO “Lebenshilfe Heidenheim e. V.”, HARTMANN organized an exchange of workers with the local company “Heidenheimer gemeinnützige Werkstätten und Wohnheime”, or HWW for short. HWW operates workshops in Heidenheim and Giengen to provide vocational training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Seven employees from their workshops visited the logistics center in Herbrechtingen for hands-on work experience. The participants explored various logistical tasks, from the labeling and shelving of goods to order picking. The experience not only offered them valuable insights into daily logistics operations, it also helped deepen mutual understanding and respect. As one participant put it: “It was simply fantastic!”

This day spent at a different job is an important step towards achieving inclusion in the workplace, and both parties are already looking forward to the next visit. In the coming weeks, HARTMANN trainees will visit the “Lebenshilfe” employees in their working environment to learn about their daily tasks and challenges.

Success and recognition

Throughout Germany, approximately 4,200 people have taken part in the “Schichtwechsel” job-swapping initiative. Participants have included 2,400 workshop employees with disabilities and 1,800 employees from companies in the general labor market. The goal of the initiative was to gain new perspectives into the world of work and to break down prejudices together. The nationwide initiative was well-received, even earning praise from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who stated in a press release: “We need more solidarity in our society and greater inclusion. This includes equal opportunities for people with disabilities and the right to self-determination.”

Looking ahead: future plans and commitment

Encouraged by the success of this initiative, HARTMANN plans to participate in “Schichtwechsel” again next year. One idea is to explore additional opportunities to foster inclusion, such as multi-day internships and logistics center tours.

Through initiatives like “Schichtwechsel”, HARTMANN continues to demonstrate its commitment to inclusivity, sustainability and social responsibility, keeping in line with the brand promise “Helps. Cares. Protects.” The company’s mission is to help patients and customers alleviate discomfort as well as simplify surgical and care processes – while always maintaining a strong focus on patient safety. At the same time, HARTMANN remains committed to upholding human rights, assuring occupational health and safety, as well as addressing social and cultural concerns. This sense of responsibility is evident in all of our diverse activities.
